The scenario that changed everything
Three months ago, I built a Make.com scenario that scrapes product data from a supplier’s website, writes it to a Google Sheet, and sends a Slack notification. Standard stuff. Ran perfectly for two weeks. Then the supplier changed their website layout — a single div got renamed — and the entire scenario collapsed. No error, no warning. Just wrong data. I spent 45 minutes adjusting the HTTP module parser and fixing CSS selectors.
At the same time, an AI agent was running the same task. Same website, same layout update. The agent registered the change, analyzed the new page structure, and extracted the correct data. Without any intervention from me. That was the moment it clicked: this is not an evolution. This is a paradigm shift.
Why the old model hits a wall
Make.com, n8n, and Zapier all share the same foundational principle: Trigger, Action, Condition. When X happens, do Y. Optionally, check Z. This model was revolutionary when it first appeared. It empowered thousands of non-programmers to connect systems and automate repetitive tasks. These tools deserve enormous credit for that — and for simple, deterministic workflows, they still work perfectly well.
But here is the reality: most business processes are not deterministic. Customer onboarding requires judgment. Should this lead go into segment A or B? The answer depends on context — the industry, their website behavior, the tone of their first email. In Make.com, I build a router with 15 filters and hope I have covered every edge case. An AI agent reads the data, understands the context, and makes an informed decision — much like an experienced team member would.
What AI agents actually do differently
The difference comes down to three capabilities that rule-based tools structurally cannot offer:
- Reasoning over unstructured data: An agent can read an email and determine whether it is a complaint, an inquiry, or a compliment — without me building regex patterns or keyword matching for every scenario.
- Adaptive behavior: When a data source changes — a new field in an API response, a modified HTML layout, an unexpected date format — an agent adapts. A Make scenario breaks.
- Multi-step reasoning: Complex tasks like “find all open invoices, check which are overdue, draft personalized payment reminders based on customer history, and send them via each customer’s preferred channel” require a 30+ module monster scenario in Make.com. An agent handles this as a natural work instruction.
Tools like OpenClaw, Claude Computer Use, and browser-use agents take this further: they can interact with graphical interfaces, fill out forms, and even operate systems that have no API. This unlocks an entire category of automations that was simply impossible before.
Data extraction: where the difference is sharpest
A concrete example from my work: I extract business data from commercial register entries, PDF invoices, and company websites. Every source has a different format. Every PDF has a different layout. In Make.com, I would need to build a separate parser for each document type — and even then, a slightly deviating format would cause a failure.
An AI agent gets the instruction: “Extract company name, address, managing director, and VAT ID.” It understands what it is looking for — regardless of whether the information sits on line 3 or line 47, whether the label reads “Geschäftsführer” or “Managing Director.” This is not parsing. This is comprehension.
The uncomfortable truth: agents are not perfect (yet)
If you are thinking you can replace all your Make scenarios with agents, think again. AI agents have real weaknesses that you need to understand:
- Cost: A simple Make scenario costs fractions of a cent per execution. An agent call with a large language model can cost 5-50 cents — at high volume, that adds up fast.
- Latency: Make.com processes a webhook in milliseconds. An agent needs 10-60 seconds to think. For time-critical workflows, that is a problem.
- Reliability: Agents can hallucinate, creatively interpret instructions, or produce different outputs from identical inputs. For processes requiring 100% determinism — accounting, compliance — this is a serious risk.
- Debugging: When a Make scenario fails, I see exactly which module failed and why. With an agent, troubleshooting is often a black box.
The smart strategy is therefore not either-or, but a hybrid model: deterministic, high-volume workflows stay in Make or n8n. Anything requiring judgment, context, or flexibility moves to agents.
The real shift
The deeper point here is not technological — it is conceptual. Make.com and n8n force you to think in flowcharts: if this, then that, else the other. AI agents force you to think in tasks and outcomes: what should the end result be? That is a fundamentally different approach. You no longer describe the path. You describe the destination. The agent finds the path itself.
As someone who has been building automations for years, this feels like the jump from command line to graphical interface. The old method still works. But it is no longer the best answer to most questions. If you are building exclusively on Make and n8n today, you are building on a paradigm that has passed its peak. If you are integrating agents into your stack, you are building on what comes next.
